The IPPT — Individual Physical Proficiency Test — is arguably the most stress-inducing two hours in the life of any Singapore serviceman. Whether you're a 22-year-old NSF counting down to your first attempt, or a 40-year-old NSman quietly hoping the 2.4km hasn't gotten harder since last year, the questions are always the same: What score do I need? How many push-ups is that? And what actually happens if I fail?

This guide answers all of it. We cover the complete IPPT scoring system, the full score chart for every age group, the Gold and Silver award amounts, what remedial training looks like, and how to prepare — whether you have eight weeks or eight days.

What Is IPPT? (The Basics)

IPPT stands for Individual Physical Proficiency Test. It is the standard physical fitness assessment administered by Singapore's Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) to all National Servicemen — both full-time NSFs and operationally ready NSmen (commonly called NSmen or reservists).

In plain terms, it's a three-station fitness test. You do push-ups, sit-ups, and run 2.4km. Your performance at each station earns you points, and your total out of 100 determines your award — or whether you get sent for Remedial Training.

The test is compulsory for all eligible servicemen in the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force (SPF), and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF). New citizens and Permanent Residents who enlist also fall under the same obligation. In short, if you serve NS, IPPT is part of the deal.

What Does IPPT Test Exactly?

The three stations are:

  • Push-ups (maximum 25 points) — timed at one minute
  • Sit-ups (maximum 25 points) — timed at one minute
  • 2.4km run (maximum 50 points) — timed run, usually on a 400m track (6 laps)

Total possible score: 100 points. The scoring for push-ups and sit-ups is straightforward — more reps, more points, up to the station maximum. The run is worth the most, which is why it causes the most anxiety.

IPPT vs NAPFA — What's the Difference?

A common point of confusion: NAPFA (National Physical Fitness Award) is the student equivalent, administered to school-going children and youths. IPPT is the adult, NS-specific version. The format and scoring differ — NAPFA includes a standing broad jump and inclined pull-ups, while IPPT's three stations are push-ups, sit-ups, and the 2.4km run. If you're past school and serving NS, IPPT is what applies to you.

IPPT Scoring System — How Points Work

Since the landmark 2015 reform that replaced the old five-station format, the IPPT scoring system has been significantly simpler. No more shuttle run, standing broad jump, or pull-ups. The current three-station system is designed to be fairer across age groups by calibrating point thresholds against your age band.

IPPT Score Categories

Total ScoreAwardCash Incentive
85 – 100 ptsGold$500
75 – 84 ptsSilver$300
51 – 74 ptsPass$0
Below 51 ptsFailRemedial Training

A score of 51 points is the minimum to pass IPPT. Falling below triggers a mandatory Remedial Training (RT) cycle. Hitting 75 earns Silver and $300. Clearing 85 earns Gold and $500. The maximum possible score is 100 points.

How Is the 2.4km Run Scored?

The 2.4km run accounts for 50 of the 100 available points, making it the single most important station. Points are awarded based on your finishing time, which is calibrated to your age group. Check our dedicated IPPT 2.4km Timing Calculator for precise point breakdowns.

Push-Up and Sit-Up Points

Both stations use a reps-to-points conversion table. See the detailed Push-Up Scoring Table and Sit-Up Scoring Table for more information.

IPPT Score Chart by Age Group (2026)

One of the most common search queries surrounding IPPT is finding the correct scoring table for your age. The system uses age bands, calculated from your birthday year. For the full list, visit our IPPT Score Chart 2026.

IPPT Gold Award: What Is It Worth?

The Gold award is the headline figure most servicemen chase. Learn more about Gold and Silver Incentive Amounts.

IPPT Gold = 85 points and above = $500 cash incentive

What Happens If You Fail IPPT?

Failing is stressful, and the consequences are real but manageable. Check our guide on What Happens If You Fail IPPT.

Remedial Training (RT)

If you fail IPPT (score below 51 points), you are enrolled in Remedial Training (RT). The programme typically runs for 10 to 20 sessions. See How Remedial Training Works for more.
