8-Week IPPT Training Plan 2026 + Full IPPT History of Singapore

The Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) has been a rite of passage for generations of Singaporean men. Since its inception, the test has undergone several major overhauls to reflect modern sports science, changing operational requirements, and the evolving fitness levels of the population.

This page traces the history of the IPPT from the early days of the SAF to the current 3-station system used in 2026.

The Early Years: The 5-Station IPPT (1979 – 2014)

For over 30 years, the IPPT was synonymous with the "5-station format." This was a comprehensive test of diverse physical attributes:

  1. Pull-ups: Upper body strength.
  2. Standing Broad Jump: Lower body power.
  3. Sit-ups: Core endurance.
  4. 4x10m Shuttle Run: Agility and speed.
  5. 2.4km Run: Aerobic endurance.

This format was rigorous but often criticized for being overly reliant on technical skill (in the case of the broad jump) or being biased against heavier servicemen (in the case of pull-ups).

The Great Reform: The 3-Station IPPT (2014 – Present)

In late 2014, MINDEF announced a major shift to the current 3-station format. The goal was to simplify the test and focus on the components of fitness most relevant to modern combat: core strength, upper body endurance, and aerobic capacity.

The Introduction of NSFIT (2021)

The next major evolution wasn't to the test itself, but to the remedial framework. In 2021, the NS Fitness Improvement Training (NSFIT) programme was launched, replacing the more rigid Remedial Training (RT) and IPPT Preparatory Training (IPT) cycles.

NSFIT introduced more training variety, including virtual sessions and gym-based functional training, making it easier for NSmen to fulfill their fitness obligations amidst busy work schedules.

IPPT in 2026: A Data-Driven Approach

Today, the IPPT is more than just a physical test — it is a data-driven fitness assessment. With the widespread use of ELISS (Electronic IPPT Scoring System) and digital tracking via the NS Portal, servicemen have instant access to their performance history and scoring benchmarks.

The current system is designed to be fair, transparent, and above all, achievable for any serviceman who maintains a basic level of fitness and healthy lifestyle.

How the Scoring Has Changed

One of the most significant changes over the years has been the age banding. As longevity and health standards in Singapore have improved, the scoring tables have been periodically adjusted to ensure they remain a challenging yet fair benchmark for each generation.

FAQ

Why were pull-ups removed from the IPPT?

Pull-ups were removed to make the test more representative of general fitness and to reduce the "entry barrier" for heavier but otherwise fit servicemen. Push-ups were deemed a better universal measure of upper body endurance.

When did the 3-station IPPT start?

The 3-station format was formally implemented across the SAF in early 2015.

Is the IPPT getting "easier" over time?

While the format has been simplified, the scoring tables are calibrated to maintain a high standard of physical readiness. Achieving Gold today still requires significant dedication and training.
