What Happens If You Fail IPPT in 2026? Consequences, RT & Retest
Failing IPPT is stressful. There is no way around that. But the consequences are well-defined, manageable, and — for the large majority of servicemen — fully reversible. Knowing exactly what comes next is the first step to getting through it without unnecessary anxiety.
This guide covers everything that happens after a failed IPPT — from the RT cycle to retakes to the legal framework.
What Counts as Failing IPPT?
You fail IPPT if your total score falls below 51 points out of 100. There is no station-specific failure — the only threshold that matters is the total.
| Score | Result |
|---|---|
| 85+ | Gold |
| 75 – 84 | Silver |
| 51 – 74 | Pass |
| Below 51 | Fail |
What Happens Immediately After Failing IPPT?
Your fail result is recorded in the NS Portal. Shortly after, you will receive notification of enrolment into Remedial Training (RT).
This notification typically comes via your unit or directly through the NS Portal. The RT schedule will be communicated to you, including dates, times, and the FCC (Fitness Conditioning Centre) you are assigned to.
What Is Remedial Training (RT)?
Remedial Training is a structured fitness programme run by MINDEF at Fitness Conditioning Centres across Singapore. It is designed to bring your fitness up to passing standard before your reassessment IPPT.
How Many RT Sessions Are There?
The number of RT sessions depends on your service and the severity of your IPPT fail:
| Fail Margin | Typical RT Sessions |
|---|---|
| Close fail (just below 51) | 10 sessions |
| Moderate fail | 12 – 15 sessions |
| Significant fail | Up to 20 sessions |
Sessions are typically held multiple times per week. Each session is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, covering all three IPPT stations — running, push-ups, and sit-ups — with professional instruction.
Is RT Attendance Compulsory?
Yes. RT attendance is compulsory. Missing sessions without valid reason can result in further penalties and an extended RT cycle. If you have a legitimate reason for missing a session (medical, overseas), inform your unit immediately and seek formal approval.
Can You Retake IPPT Before RT Starts?
Yes. Within your open IPPT window, you can book and attempt IPPT again independently before your RT cycle begins — or even during it. If you pass on a retake, your obligation for that window is cleared. If you fail again, the RT cycle continues.
How Many Times Can You Take IPPT?
There is no hard cap on the number of IPPT attempts within your window. You can book and take IPPT multiple times. The goal is always to pass within your window — the system is designed to give you multiple opportunities to do so.
IPPT Reassessment After RT
At the end of your RT cycle, you will be scheduled for a reassessment IPPT. This is a standard IPPT test — same format, same scoring. You must score 51 points or more to clear your RT obligation.
If you fail the reassessment, the consequences escalate. Further RT sessions may be assigned, and persistent failures can attract more serious administrative or legal attention.
What Are the Legal Consequences of Failing IPPT?
A single IPPT fail triggers RT — there are no immediate legal consequences. Legal consequences arise from deliberately avoiding your IPPT obligation, not from a performance failure.
Under the Enlistment Act, NSmen who persistently default on their NS obligations — including IPPT — can face prosecution. Penalties include fines and, in serious cases, imprisonment.
In practice, MINDEF's approach is rehabilitation-first. The RT system exists precisely to help servicemen recover their fitness. Legal action is a last resort for deliberate defaulters, not for servicemen who try and fail.
Does Failing IPPT Affect Your Salary or Career?
For NSmen (reservists): There is no direct salary deduction for failing IPPT once. The consequence is RT and reassessment. However, accumulating a record of persistent failures or default can have career implications if your employer has NS obligations visibility, or if you are a regular serviceman in a uniformed service.
For NSFs (full-time): Administrative consequences within your unit are possible for repeated failures, but a single fail is handled through RT.
IPPT Fail Penalty Singapore — What Servicemen Actually Experience
Here is a realistic picture of what most servicemen go through after failing:
- Fail notification received via NS Portal
- RT schedule communicated — typically starts within a few weeks
- RT sessions attended (10–20 sessions over several weeks)
- Fitness improves through structured training
- Reassessment IPPT taken — most servicemen pass at this stage
- Obligation cleared for the window
The majority of servicemen who fail IPPT and complete their RT cycle pass the reassessment. The system works — the challenge is the time and inconvenience involved.
How to Avoid Failing IPPT Again
The single most effective strategy is not to leave your preparation to the last few weeks of your window. Servicemen who maintain moderate fitness year-round almost never fail. Dedicate 8 weeks to structured preparation before your window — for a complete plan, see our 8-Week IPPT Training Plan.
FAQ
Is failing IPPT a criminal offence?
No. Failing IPPT is a performance outcome, not an offence. Deliberately avoiding your IPPT obligation entirely is what can escalate to legal consequences.
How long does RT last?
Typically 4 to 8 weeks depending on the number of sessions assigned and their frequency.
Can I defer IPPT to avoid RT?
Deferment is available under specific circumstances (medical, overseas). It does not eliminate your obligation — it pushes your window. See our IPPT Window Period page for details.
What if I fail the RT reassessment?
Further RT may be assigned. At this point it is strongly advisable to contact your unit's S1 and seek guidance on next steps.
Will my employer know I failed IPPT?
Not automatically. NS records are managed through MINDEF's systems and are not routinely shared with civilian employers.
