IPPT Remedial Training (RT) 2026: Requirements, Sessions & Exit Guide
If you fail your IPPT or miss your window, you are required to undergo Remedial Training (RT). In 2026, this is managed through the NSFIT (NS Fitness Improvement Training) framework. The goal is no longer just "punishment" for failing, but a structured way to help you build the fitness necessary to pass in the future.
This page explains how RT and NSFIT work, the session requirements, and how you can clear your obligations efficiently.
What Is NSFIT?
NSFIT is the current framework for NSmen who do not achieve a "Pass" standard in their IPPT. It replaces the old RT system with a more flexible, 10-session programme.
You are required to complete 10 sessions of NSFIT, which includes one IPPT attempt at the end. However, if you pass an IPPT at any point during your 10 sessions, your remaining sessions are waived.
How to Complete Your RT / NSFIT
- Register: Book your sessions via the NS Portal. You can choose different types of training based on your preference and location.
- Attend Sessions: Each session typically lasts 60–90 minutes and is conducted at an FCC or a participating SAFRA/ActiveSG gym.
- The IPPT Attempt: Your 10th session is typically a formal IPPT attempt. If you pass this, you have cleared your obligation for the window.
Pro Tip: You don't have to wait until the 10th session to take an IPPT. You can book an IPPT attempt independently during your RT cycle. If you pass it, your RT requirement ends immediately.
Types of NSFIT Training
The SAF has introduced variety into the RT cycle to make it less monotonous:
- NSFIT at FCCs: Standard metabolic and strength training conducted at military camps.
- NSFIT at SAFRA / ActiveSG: Functional fitness training conducted at public gyms. These are often more convenient for those who don't live near a camp.
- Virtual NSFIT: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) conducted over Zoom. This allows you to complete sessions from home. (Check the NS Portal for current availability of virtual sessions).
Consequences of Not Completing RT
Failing to complete your 10 required sessions within the stipulated timeframe is a serious matter:
- Disciplinary Action: You may be called for a summary trial.
- Fines: Typical fines for first-time defaulters range from $100 to $300.
- Detention: In persistent or extreme cases of non-compliance, detention is a possibility, though rare for initial defaults.
How to Clear RT Fast
The fastest way to clear your RT is simple: Train and Pass the IPPT.
Instead of just "showing up" for 10 sessions to clock time, use the sessions to actually improve. If you put in the effort during the first 3 sessions and then pass an independent IPPT attempt in the 4th week, you've saved yourself 6 sessions of travel and training.
Use our 8-Week Training Plan in conjunction with your RT sessions to maximize your improvement.
FAQ
How many sessions of RT do I need to do?
Under the NSFIT framework, you need to complete 10 sessions. An IPPT pass at any point clears the remaining sessions.
Do I get paid for attending RT/NSFIT?
You do not receive service pay for RT sessions, but you may be eligible for a transport allowance depending on the venue and your service status. Check the NS Portal for details.
Can I do all 10 sessions in one month?
There are usually limits on how many sessions you can book per week (typically 2–3). This is to ensure you actually have time to recover and improve, rather than just "spamming" sessions.
What happens if I miss a booked RT session?
You should cancel at least 24–48 hours in advance if you can't make it. Repeatedly booking and not showing up can lead to your booking privileges being suspended.
